The Canadian Society of Addiction Medicine defines addiction to be a bio-psycho-social and spiritual disease of the brain that is chronic, progressive, relapsing and fatal. It is characterized by loss of control over the use of a drug including alcohol (and/or behaviour), a pre-occupation with its continued use (and/or engagement in the behaviour) despite adverse physical, psychological and social consequences. The Treatment Staff at the Top of the World Treatment Centres are highly trained to assist and to guide clients afflicted with the disease of addiction to recover in all these areas.
Through our program our treatment staff utilize a variety of evidence based treatment methods including Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavorial therapy, schema therapy, 12 step facilitation, mindfulness and relaxation/stress management therapy etc. We provide up to date clinical education and self-care seminars utilizing group psycho educational and group psychotherapeutic methods in conjunction with individual therapy sessions for those clients in our intensive day program.
At Top of the World Treatment Centre our clients may start with a comprehensive ½ day evaluation/assessment before enrolling into our programs. We use a variety of assessment tools to fully diagnose their addictions and any co-occurring mental health conditions. A diagnosis based on the DSM IV will be formulated together with their readiness for treatment. Based on these findings they will be placed according to the ASAM’s Placement Criteria into one of our various programs if necessary.
Our program is not a traditional 12-step program as we utilize evidence based and holistic techniques as described earlier. However evidence does show and we see great value in attendance to 12 step programs such as AA & NA and other mutual support groups such as SMART Recovery or Women in Sobriety both during and after treatment. Attendance is associated with improved abstinence and sobriety. We highly recommend our clients to attend these groups to improve their success and personal fulfillment in sobriety. We also offer aftercare and continuing care support groups on site for graduates of our program.
As we are a holistic program in that we focus on the “ whole person” we also encourage a balanced living approach to recovery emphasizing regular self care and stress reduction with exercise, stretching/yoga, tai chi, mindfulness meditation, recovery encouraging literature and creative therapies for enhanced internal tranquility and to support attention span and information retention as part of a clinically proven cognitive functioning repair process. Creative therapies are available and taught to clients in various media including art therapy. Nutrition is very important and we provide healthy balanced snacks and lunches.
Recognizing that addiction is also a disease that affects the entire family, we have family therapists to help the client and their families in our intensive day program. Finally, Continuing care/aftercare is very important in sustaining sobriety. In conjunction with their primary counselor, our clients create a detailed relapse prevention plan with detailed follow up care during the completion of their treatment with us.
